Fayhee’s Go-Ahead 3 Helps Chargers Hold off McHenry Co. in Region IV Quarters

Carter Fayhee (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) drained the go-ahead 3-pointer with 4 minutes left and scored a team-high 17 points as the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team held off McHenry County on Thursday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium in the quarterfinals of the Region IV District 4 tournament.

The Chargers (21-7) won their fifth straight contest and for the ninth time in 10 games to advance to face top-seeded Morton in the semifinals at 4 p.m. Sunday at Waubonsee.

KEY MOMENTS

  • Six straight points gave McHenry County (9-19) a 63-62 lead with 4:14 to go, but Fayhee knocked in a 3 from the right wing on the next possession to give the Chargers the lead for good.
  • The Scots had the ball down 67-65 out of a timeout with :44 left, but Sandburg freshman Elias Akale (Ashdad, Israel/Mekif Tet) stole the ball from Trevor Potter, who was whistled for his second technical foul after disputing the call. Akale knocked down the technical foul shots and added two more on the possession as the Chargers stretched their lead to 71-65 with :31.8 left.
  • McHenry County drained five 3s in the first 9 minutes and went 9 of 16 beyond the arc in the first half, but the Chargers took a 45-42 lead into the break thanks to a trey at the buzzer from freshman James Jones (Springfield, Ill./Lanphier).

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Fayhee scored 17 on 6-of-14 shooting to pace the Chargers and added seven rebounds. The freshman guard scored 10 of his points in the first half.

OTHER TOP CHARGERS

  • Jones came off the bench to score 14 and six rebounds while going 5 of 10 from the floor.
  • Freshman guard Scott Gowan (Rockford, Ill./Rockford East) had 12 points and hit 5 of 10 from the field.
  • Sophomore forward Deandrey Robinson (Peoria, Ill./Peoria) had 10 points and eight rebounds, snapping a string of 11 consecutive games with double-digit boards.

FOR THE SCOTS
Alex St. Pierre hit five 3s and scored a game-high 19 to lead the Scots. Potter scored 17 and hit three 3s before his ejection.

UP NEXT
Sandburg will face top-seeded Morton in the semifinals at 4 p.m. Sunday on the campus of Waubonsee Community College. The championship game is set for 7:30 p.m. March 9.
